Recreus PET-G CF is presented as a material with excellent mechanical properties for creating high impact-resistant parts without relinquishing the ease of PET-G printing.

At Recreus we start the year betting on innovation and on continuing to increase our product portfolio with the latest generation materials. That is why we open the year launching a new material: the new PET-G CF, a PET-G based filament reinforced with carbon fiber. Let's discover it!

PET-G based filament

The new PET-G CF is a PET-G (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) based filament, the most popular consumer plastic on the planet and widely used for almost everything from the manufacture of water bottles to the production of kitchen utensils. A highly prized material, it even displaced ABS as the second most popular filament next to PLA, due to its outstanding mechanical properties. These include chemical resistance, impact resistance, ease of printing and light flexibility.

Extra ingredient, carbon fiber!

On the other hand, it is also composed of carbon fiber nanoparticles. Carbon fiber is a synthetic fiber consisting of thin filaments of 5-10 μm in diameter and composed mainly of carbon. It is a synthetic fiber because it is manufactured from polyacrylonitrile. It has mechanical properties similar to steel, although with higher impact resistance, but being as light as wood or plastic.

Features of PET-G CF

As we have seen, this is a doubly impressive material. The mechanical integrity of the PET-G blend is dramatically increased by infusing fragments of carbon fibers into its polymeric base, leading us to discover a new PET-G CF filament endowed with the following characteristics:

    • Impact- and wear-resistant
    • Chemical resistance
    • High thermal resistance
    • High durability and low density
    • Ductility
    • Electrostatic dissipation
    • Compatible with most 3D printers
    • Matte black finish

Applications

PET-G CF is a highly attractive material for a wide range of industries such as consumer electronics, aeronautics, construction or automotive. It is a material recommended for parts that have to withstand impacts or that need to have a good resistance. With PET-G CF it is possible to obtain final parts with high mechanical strength in a matte black finish. It is ideal for the production of electronics, machinery, automobiles and household appliances, as well as for the creation of new products:

  • Chassis and enclosures, parts for bicycles...
  • Rings, accessories and textiles.
  • Casing covers.
  • Medical parts, such as prostheses and accessories and components for orthopedic mechanisms.

Recommendations for printing PET-G CF

To print PETG- CF we recommend using hardened steel or ruby-type nozzles, avoiding brass nozzles with a tendency to erode easily, and printing using the following printing parameters:

  • Printing temperature: 245-260 °C
  • Bed temperature: 70°C
  • Print speed: 40-60 mm/s
  • Retraction speed: 20-50 mm/s at a distance of 1-2 mm

Why print with Recreus PET-G CF?

If we can already consider PET-G filament as a suitable and powerful material for the creation of technical and industrial parts, when we combine it with carbon fiber, it becomes a 'winning horse'. As a result, we obtain an elastic modulus three times higher and a breaking strength 5 times higher than with conventional PET-G. It also has better dimensional stability and accuracy and a superior ability to resist deformation.
