Install the 2.20 Hotend on your Bambu Lab H2D

1. Introduction

The Bambu Lab H2D starts with an edge few printers have: itsĀ dual extruder system. You can dedicate one head to flexible TPU and keep the other for PLA, PETG or another rigid support material. The result is professional-quality prints, with clean supports that peel away without damaging the flexible part.

Until now, flexibles especially the softest ones, forced frustratingly slow speeds. The reason isnā€™t temperature: a 1.75 mm flexible filament bends, compresses and loses push inside the extruder until it clogs.

The solution is theĀ Filaflex 2.20 mm System. This is not "a harder TPU": itā€™s a larger-diameter filament that behaves like a stiffer column, reaching the hotend without twisting and keeping a stable push. More control, more stability and, above all, more speed and fewer failures.

2. Preparation and Safety

By following this sequence, you will ensure a professional-grade setup, perfectly calibrated for high-speed flexible printing while maintaining full versatility for rigid materials.

3. Step by Step Hardware Installation

Follow this sequence to integrate the Filaflex 2.20 system into your H2D. Each phase is designed to facilitate assembly and ensure flow precision. We will start by accessing the print head, followed by the specific adjustments that unlock industrial-grade flexible printing. Take your time, follow the icons, and transform your machine into a high-performance flexible powerhouse.

On the H2D weĀ only work on the right head; the left one is untouched. Before starting, remove any object from the top to take off the glass and work with free access from above.
Step 1: Unload the filament

Action 1: If filament is loaded, unload it so you can remove the hotend. Do it from the screen, as usual.

šŸŸ¢ INFO: Even though we only modify the right head, we recommend unloading both filaments to work more comfortably.

Action 3: Turn off the power switch at the back and unplug the power cord.

Step 2: Lower the bed

Action 1: With the filament unloaded, go to the Control tab, Motion XYZ (you may need to perform a homing procedure first)

Action 2: Next, press -10 to lower the heatbed along the Z-axis so you can work comfortably.

Action 3: Lower the bed by at least 260 mm to create enough space to work comfortably.

Step 3: Remove the top glass and release the PTFE tube

Action 1: Take off the top glass cover.

Action 2: Release the Teflon tube from the back by pressing the buffer fitting.

Action 3: Release the right Teflon tube by pressing down on the top of the extruder.

Step 4: Remove Front Extruder Cover

Itā€™s the part protecting the extrusion system at the front.

Pull from the top to separate it.

Step 5: Hotend Removal

šŸ”“ Select the right head on the screen and check itā€™s cold. Only handle it cold.

Action 1: Select the right nozzle in the control panel to activate it so you can remove the hotend.

Action 2: Remove the protective silicone strip from the hotend.

Action 3: Open the support/clip that holds the hotend in place. Pull the right hotend out of the printer.

Step 6: Enlarge the RIGHT Filament Channel

This is the only extra procedure and itā€™s done just once: it makes your printer compatible with the 2.20 mm system in hybrid mode (1.75 and 2.20 at the same time).

šŸŸ¢ INFO: This does NOT affect your prints or their quality. We just gain a few microns so the 2.20 passes freely. No delicate part is touched: itā€™s a simple plastic passage, lower and upper.

As shown in the following image of the disassembled extruder, both parts are made entirely of plastic, so donā€™t worry, no electrical or delicate components will be affected.

Action 1: Prepare the tool. Mount the drill bit in the included handle, leaving it as extended as possible for better access.

Action 2: Upper right side (first). Activate the right head on the screen selector.

Action 3: Insert it as parallel to the filament inlet as posible and turn very gently. The bit makes its own way; donā€™t force it.

Keep going until you can see the drill bit through the indicated hole.

Thatā€™s your signal to stop and extract it by turning the opposite way.

Action 4: Reposition for the lower part. Turn on the printer.

Action 5: In the control panel, press the left button on the screen to have the system move to the left side and set it as the primary hotend.

Action 6: Then turn off the H2D and disconnect power. With the printer off, manually move the flow blocker from the right side to the left.

Action 7: Lower right side. Repeat from below: vertical bit, gentle turn, advance until you can see the drill bit through the indicated hole.

Thatā€™s your signal to stop and extract it by turning the opposite way.

šŸŸ¢ INFO: By doing this, we gain a few microns of space so the 2.20 filament passes easily, without affecting precision when printing with 1.75 mm.

Step 7: Extruder Channel Cleaning

Blow or use a blower to remove chips or plastic debris from inside the channel.

Step 8: Install the Recreus 2.20 Hotend

Action 1: Open your new Recreus 2.20 Hotend and same process as the standard
one, in reverse. Place the hotend from the kit in position and secure it firmly so itā€™s well fixed.

Action 2: Replace the protective silicone sock. Manually move the flow
blocker from the left side to the right.

Step 9: Reassembly

Remount the cover. Put the extruder
front cover back and leave everything as it was.

Step 10: PTFE Tube

Option A: Bypass connection (rear TPU inlet). The H2D has a dedicated rear bypass inlet for flexibles.
Place the original Teflon tube into the right extruder using that rear bypass hole. Put the spool on the side holder and youā€™re set.

Option B: Short PTFE + side dryer (our favorite). Place a short PTFE section at the right extruder inlet and feed filament from a side dryer. Use the holder we designed (downloadable at recreus.com): compatible with several dryers, it lets you feed and dry the flexible at once. Find it below.

layer: less stringing and better adhesion.
Step 11: Load & Purge

šŸŸ¢ INFO: In this case and with flexibles, it is recommended to load the material manually. Let's see how it's done.

Turn on your 3D printer to start the final configuration process.

When working with the 2.20 system, we recommend introducing the filament manually initially.

From the control tab of your Bambu Lab, heat the nozzle to 250Ā°C.

Activate the extrusion controls (clicking the down arrow) while pushing gently to perform a full purge and clear any residue from the channel.
